During the lockdown in spring 2020, Frenell managing directors Martin Selig and Dr.-Ing. Max Mertins started developing a technical solution against the global pandemic. The result is the UVC-based air purifier youvee®, which is marketed by youvee GmbH, a company founded for this purpose. The impetus for this came from demands from science and politics for decentralised air purification systems with new, non-critical flow effects and adequate disinfection performance. youvee® takes exactly these requirements and approaches into account. The managing engineer of youvee GmbH, Jann Kirchberger has many years of research and industrial experience in the fields of ventilation technology, product development, optics and series production. This expertise is reflected in the technology, design and manufacturing process of youvee®.

The engineers with research and industrial experience in the areas of ventilation technology, architecture, optics, and serial production developed youvee® as part of an initiative. The impetus was given by demands from science and politics for decentralized air cleaning systems with new, non-critical flow effects and adequate disinfection performance. youvee® takes exactly these requirements and approaches into account. The profound expertise of Max and Martin were incorporated into the technology, design, and serial production process of youvee®.

Since May 2021, Jann Kirchberger has been appointed CEO of youvee® GmbH. He is responsible for sales, marketing, product development, production and administration. He has also been responsible for the operational business of Frenell GmbH as Chief Operating Officer (COO) since January 2020. Before that, he worked for many years as a senior project manager in the development, implementation and construction of solar thermal power plant projects in Australia, Spain, India and Italy. His technical focus lies in the areas of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, optics, process engineering and product development. Jann Kirchberger holds a diploma from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) specializing in mechanical engineering.

Martin Selig ist seit 2015 als Chief Executive Officer für die Geschäftsentwicklung und Gesamtstrategie der FRENELL GmbH verantwortlich. Vorher war er maßgeblich an der weltweiten Implementierung der Fresnel-CSP Technologie beteiligt. Unter seiner Leitung wurde das weltweit erste Fresnelsolarkraftwerk PE2 in Spanien entwickelt und realisiert. Er ist Gründungspartner des Ingenieurbüros ip5, einem Spin-off-Unternehmen der Universität Karlsruhe, das sich auf die Entwicklung, Gestaltung und Umsetzung energieeffizienter Gebäudeplanung und erneuerbarer Energieversorgungssysteme spezialisiert hat. Martin Selig hat ein Ingenieurdiplom des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT).

Dr. Max Mertins ist Chief Technology Officer der FRENELL GmbH und verantwortet alle Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten des Unternehmens. Dr. Max Mertins hat am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) in CSP-Technologie auf der Basis linearer Fresnel-Systeme promoviert und die angewendete Fresnel-Solarfeldtechnologie entwickelt. Er arbeitete lange Jahre als Wissenschaftler am Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme in Freiburg sowie am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), bevor er zusammen mit Martin Selig das Solarunternehmen FRENELL gründete.
Für seine bahnbrechende Forschungsarbeiten im Bereich der Fresnelkollektortechnik erhielt Dr. Max Mertins im Jahr 2011 den renommierten Otto Haxel Preis des KIT.
